Guadet, Marguerite-Élie
(1758-1794)
   political figure
   Born in Saint-Émilion, Marguerite Élie Guadet, an attorney, joined the jacobin club shortly after the beginning of the revolution of 1789. He became one of the most brilliant of the orators among the girondins, and sat in the Legislative Assembly and in the Convention, where he voted for the death of King louis XVI and was one of the most bitter adversaries of the montagnards. After the elimination of the Girondins (May 31-June 2, 1793), Guadet led the federalist insurrection in Normandy but was defeated, captured, condemned, and executed.
